“Dr. Kent has joined the undead.”
“The undead? You mean a vampire? You know you’re crazy, right?”
The boy looked at Isabelle. “Was Dr. Kent capable of climbing buildings with her bare hands before tonight? Has she always been able to disappear?”
Oh yeah. Isabelle’s cheeks burned. But on the other hand, this guy was asking her to believe Nadja Kent was a vampire. Nothing this boy was saying could possibly be true, even after all she had seen. There had to be an explanation for everything. “Okay. And where do you fit in? You’re not a student here. Who are you? How did you randomly happen along with all this expertise on vampires?”
The boy turned to her, moving closer. Then closer still. This guy had no sense of personal space. He paused, studying her, just a few inches from her face. “Let’s just say I have—what is the American slang? Inside information.” And he opened his mouth wide, close enough that his needle-sharp fangs were almost touching Isabelle.
Isabelle pushed him. And he hadn’t been expecting it, because if he had, it never would have worked. With the little bit of room she gained from the push, she raced over the long university bridge.
She almost made it across.
She was nearly off the bridge when he came crashing down from above. He must have jumped all the way across the bridge. Running full speed, Isabelle was unable to stop, and she bowled him over. They both went rolling, the boy laughing like a maniac.
The boy rolled to his side, looking at Isabelle, still laughing. “You’ll never escape me that way.”
